SHATTERED LIVES -- A special report.; Caring Parents, No Answers, In Columbine Killers Pasts
The father of one of the boys was asked some years ago to jot down his lifes goals in the memory book for his 20th high school reunion. His answer was succinct, straightforward, and, it seemed, not unrealistically ambitious: Raise two good sons. The other father prided himself on being his sons soul mate. They had just spent five days - Special report, Shattered Lives, on families of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 12 classmates, themselves and teacher on April 12 in shooting rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo; friends, neighbors, distant family members and teachers present portrait of Harrises and Klebolds as caring, conscientious parents who structured lives around supporting children and believed they were on right track, but suggest there was fundamental disconnection between sons troubled world and lives parents thought they were living; both hid darkest behavior and deadly plot behind facades of stability decorated with future plans; outcasts, obsessed with violent video games and intrigued by German rock music and Nazi culture, they also had pasttimes as wholesome as baseball; were part of tight circle of friends, earned top grades, held jobs and looked forward to life after graduation--factors that apparently reassured parents; in aftermath of shootings, vexing question seems to be not whether Harrises or Klebolds were caring parents, but whether caring is enough; photos (L) - Andrew Bluth, Mindy Sink, Jack Begg and Michael Porter contributed to this report. - By PAM BELLUCK and JODI WILGOREN

What about this screams "memorial service" and what screams "pep rally?"?
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said Thursday he and other aides didnt expect the presidents remarks at the schools basketball arena to receive as much rousing applause as it did. Gibbs said the crowds response, at times cheering and shouting, was understandable.
"I think part of the grieving process is celebrating the lives of those that were lost, and celebrating the miracles of those that survived," he said.
Celebrating the miracles? Okay, good, so Gibbs believes in Miracles. Thats good but, which does this indicate? "Memorial" or "Pep rally"?
"Well before Obama arrived, the atmosphere had become celebratory. People lined up for hours, and when the doors finally opened about two hours before the start, a huge cheer went up and the crowd surged into the arena."
...
To observers, the crowd was spontaneous.
They cheered when the two trauma surgeons who treated Rep. Gabrielle Giffords entered and were shown on the overhead screen. As the camera would focus on other individuals thrust into the spotlight after the shooting, the crowd went wild, whether it was the first responders, the woman who grabbed the alleged gunmans ammunition or Daniel Hernandez, the intern who helped Giffords at the scene of the shooting.
...
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who drew criticism from some corners for his remarks about Arizona immediately after the shooting, drew particularly loud applause and responded with a wave to the cameras.
So I ask, what parts of this seem like a memorial service? How is the sheriffs receiving applause and parading around like hes on stage, waving to the cameras, conducive to remembering and contemplating the losses of life we saw on Saturday? How does cheering for the guy who took the "ammo" help to prevent things like this in the future or honor the memories of those lost?
How much cheering goes on when we read the 9/11 Victims Memorial List? None. Even soldiers cry.
