Why was Martin Luther King Jr winning the nobel peace prize the most important black civil rights event?
We have to do a debate in history and out team is doing this as our question. The other teams are doing march on washing Washington and Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech.
Although I dont beleive it is what are some good points to make?
Answer: It was an important event because it showed that progress could occur by using non-violence as the main thrust of the effort to win civil rights. It was not the most important event in the civil rights struggle, but it was one of them. Mandela won it in South Africa for his use of non-violence. As the leader of the civil rights marches, sit-ins, and peaceful demonstrations Martin Luther King gave an important leadership role for others to follow. Martin Luther King used the church pulpit as well as the street to demonstrate that progress can come without violence. So they gave him the Nobel Prize for Peace.

what world events influenced Martin Luther King Jr?
Not people, but events.
what happened in the african - american civil rights movement that influenced him? what about events that happened in the rest of the world?
Answer: Martin Luther King Jr would have been severly influenced by Ghandis Satyaragha movement or non-violent protest which he would use during the Montgomery Bus Boycott between 1955-1956.Ghandis method of non-violent protest was used by King as it attracted wide media coverage. Scenes of brutality by the police against peaceful protestors would have focused attention on the Civil-Rights movement and influence the Federal Government in speeding up the process of desegregation.Every time where there was acts of violence on the part of the police or mobs, the media would highlight this to the North where they would get sentiment from the people and force the government to focus on the issue. Because of this the Federal government passed many acts such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which organised black voters registration and banned the literacy test laws in the old south. The government also passed the CivIl Rights act of 1964 which banned segregation in public places such as sport stadiums, restraunts and public toilets. The Government also banned discrimination in terms of housing in 1965.There was also a change in which party black people voted for. Traditionally most blacks were in support of the Republicans but they were seen as too conservative. After the Voting Rights Act most blacks switched support to the Democrats. One of the most famous acts of Brutality during the Civil Rights Movement was in the Selma to Montgomery march when the Chief of Police,Eugene Bull Connor used water cannons and dogs against the peaceful protesters. Even Children got hurt during this protest. As usual the media forced the Federal Government to intervene. One significant aspect of the Voting Rights Act was that elections and voting was now supervised in the South as they now had a bad history with discrimination. The Cold War was also important in influencing the course of the Civil Rights Movement. The US portrayed itself as the leader of the free world against evil communism. This position was difficult to maintain when the "Old South" practised legal discrimination against Blacks. If the United States wanted to maintain it's credibility in Europe and the newly formed African and Asian countries then the US would have to reform itself. Discrimination against Blacks in the South was used as an argument by Communists in the Soviet Union and other countries to expose the untrue "Myth" of Capitalism and described Communism as as a fairer system. I hope this answers your question and Good luck.

What were the events or problems that impacted Martin Luther King Jr?
How has he contributed to society in a positive way?
How has Martin Luther King Jr inspired others to do something good?
Why do you think he deserves to be known as a Global citizen?
Answer: MLK, Jr. doesn't deserve to be known as a global citizen (whatever that means). If you saw what I saw, and know what I know, about the civil rights riots in Selma and Montgomery, AL, you wouldn't have any respect for the man. He caused horrible things to happen to both blacks and whites; they are the people who suffered, not MLK, Jr.
If anyone deserves global citizenship, it was Mrs. Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat and move to the back of a bus.

Why do some people think Obama is the next Martin Luther King Jr?
Hes nowhere near as great of a speaker as Martin Luther King Jr, and his life is way easier than MLKs. I hate how some people call his speech a "Historic event" saying its just as historic as MLKs....Yeah right. No, I am NOT jealous about McCain losing, I could care less. But seriously, Obama is also half white, he shouldnt be regarded as the next MLK.
Answer: I'm white. I work in healthcare in LA.I've seen hundreds of patients wearing shirts with the caption " his dream finally realized" with images of MLK and BO fading into each other. Black leaders have falsely equated the two with the hope of mobilizing the black vote for Obama and to exploit black folks as ignorant, just as the Democratic party has done most other minorities. do you think black people know that MLK was a Republican? hell no. MLK was for equal rights for ALL citizens. THAT dream was realized with the end of segregation. MLK would probably turn in his grave if he knew that his words were evoked to perpetuate the decline of the black culture and persist the mind-set of entitlement that black folks seem to have.
