Should I feel pressured to work on a School Holiday?
I received an e-mail from a parent telling me that my principal (I work as a public school music teacher) had suggested I teach one of my kids a song and have them perform at a community Martin Luther King Day event. Here are my issues with it: the even takes place on Martin Luther King Day which is a school holiday, and also happens to be my husbands birthday. I dont have firm plans as of now, but I was toying with the idea of us going out of town for that long weekend. Another issue: my chorus has 140 4th graders and frankly, organizing them into an out of school activity and then having to supervise them sounds like a huge pain, even if the event is supposed to be only an hour or so (and i didnt notice my principal volunteering himself to do that part of it.)
The parent did suggest that if I am unavailable that day I can prepare the kids and try to have a parent run it.....but I dont know if I trust a parent and dont want my group represented badly.
Im not tenured yet at my school and the fact that the principal suggested this makes me feel like I cant say no. Any advice, particularly from other teachers, would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: You need to talk your husband and the principal.Tell the principal that it is the birthday of your husband. That you planned to go away. The other option is to talk to your husband and ask whether you could have his birthday celebrations on another weekend. You do not want to lose your job. It is a big ask to work during the holidays. Cant the principal organize for another musical person to come in for the day? You should not feel pressured to work>

Is Google Against Veterans?
Anybody who visits Google.com on most holidays, and lots of other "special" days, will often see a unique logo for that days event.
St. Patricks Day, Persian New Year, Bastille Day, Earth Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Leap Year, and many other days get special logos (see for yourself: http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html )
However, on Memorial Day this year, they didnt have any thing special to honor our troops, veterans, and all of those that have helped make this country what it is today.
Is this a 10-year oversight (it doesnt look like theyve ever had anything for this special day), or is there something more to the story here. You would think if they can celebrate Frances Independence Day and Persias New Year, that Google could at least do the same for our Memorial Day.
Whats your thoughts?
Answer: My kids were just asking me that yesterday. How come doesn't Google have their name decorated. We went through many holidays and figured that even international holidays are recognized. So what is up with that? I was quite disturbed by it also.

History question, HELP!?
After viewing the photo tour, choose three sites and/or locations that played a role in the Civil Rights Movement. For each site or event describe briefly what occurred and why it is significant in the Civil Rights Movement.
Identify two ways that police in the South resisted civil rights.
What occurred on August 28, 1963? What was the purpose of it?
What occurred in the Watts section of Los Angeles in August 1965?
Why did hundreds of students come to Mississippi on June 29, 1964?
Who was James Meredith and what happened to him?
How did Martin Luther King, Jr., refer to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam?
In what year did the U.S. first begin to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.s birthday as a holiday?
For whom did Martin Luther King, Jr. have a lifelong admiration? Why?
Answer: August 28, 1963 was the march on Washington D.C. - Where he made his "I Have A Dream Speech"
Martin Luther King Day - officially went into effect in 1986. 1989- 44 of the 50 states adopted it. 1999 New Hampshire was the last state to adopt it
James Merideth- He attempted to become the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi. He was shot by a Sniper during his March Against Fear. He ceased to be a civil rights activist in the 1960s and found employment as a stockbroker.
Hope that helps!

So now Obama is being made part of Martin Luther King day?
There was a poster at my school that said something about an event going on for MLK day and it showed a picture of both Martin Luther King and Barack Obama. It said something like "What it means to be black" and it said something about the two historic black figures in this country. I know his inauguration day is the day after the holiday but I know that was not what this event is aiming for. It is something put on by the all colors club. What do you say about it? I wonder if they will change the name to Obama-Martin Luther King day....I hope not.
When I meant "they" they means the government. Not the school.

MLK Jr didnt speak out against Reagan?
To the poster who denied MLK Jr ever denounced Reagan:
As I already said, Reagan wasnt born in 1980. He was a national figure well known in the 60s for his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
You wont believe my sources.
Well how about this right-wing source?
There is probably no greater sacred cow in America than Martin Luther King Jr. The slightest criticism of him or even suggesting that he isn’t deserving of a national holiday leads to the usual accusations of racist, fascism, and the rest of the usual left-wing epithets not only from liberals, but also from many ostensible conservatives and libertarians.
This is amazing because during the 50s and 60s, the Right almost unanimously opposed the civil rights movement. Contrary to the claims of many neocons, the opposition was not limited to the John Birch Society and southern conservatives. It was made by politicians like Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, and in the pages of Modern Age, Human Events...
King said of Reagan, "When a Hollywood performer, lacking distinction even as an actor, can become a leading war hawk candidate for the presidency, only the irrationalities induced by war psychosis can explain such a turn of events."

Has PC renaming really gotten this insane?
With PC already run amok, now theyre actually listing Good Friday and Easter Monday as each a "spring holiday" on school/government calendars. This of course is the same with December 25 as "winter holiday":
(example— http://www.warrenville.il.us/c_cal-event.aspx?id=541 )
Just search Google for ["Spring holiday" "March 21, 2008"] for hundreds of results.
I mean, what the hell is the point? If youre going to observe a holiday why do you REFUSE to name it? Its obvious that this is selective censorship because these "Spring holidays" always move to fall co-incidentally with Easter every year.
If Im non-Christian, Id be less "offended" if the state actually had the balls to name the Christian holiday theyre observing. At least this way would be honest and not absurdly Newspeakish. On second thought, if Im non-African-American (another PC term) am I supposed to be "offended" by Martin Luther King Day? Maybe they need to rename that to "Winter Holiday #2".
Not everyone celebrates MLK Day either but its not listed as "Winter Holiday" on the calendar. And I know the whole Xmas/pagan deal, but the holidays is still CALLED Christmas on Dec. 25
Answer: Subsequent to the irrelevance of the Christian religion, these holidays are just going back to their original usages.
The Mid-winter festival was taken over by Christians and became "Christmas".
Easter used to celebrate the Spring equinox.

What do U think As immigrants push for reform, some question use of King’s legacy?
Immigrant advocates are calling the fight for immigration reform an extension of the civil rights movement.
“The civil rights movement was about what is essentially American,” said Alie Kabba, executive director of the United African Organization. “And I think that that spirit is consistent with the immigrant rights movement.”
Kabba said unjust laws have kept 12 million undocumented immigrants living the United States excluded from society.
“We cannot be a democracy of people, of equality, and still exclude millions and millions of people,” Kabba said.
Immigrants joined African Americans over the weekend to celebrate the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by rallying support for reform legislation that would legalize undocumented workers demanding equality for all marginalized people. An event at First Baptist Church Congregational Church on Saturday, which drew more than 1,200 participants from the immigrant, religious and black communities, invoked King’s legacy as a platform from which to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.
As a display of solidarity between the two communities, Major Nunn, an African American, and Raul Real, a Latino, spoke at the rally about their employment at Pete’s Fresh Market in Calumet City. Both Nunn and Raul said they were threatened by managers and fired for trying to organize employees.
“Calumet City, it’s Hispanic and African American,” Nunn said. “And that’s how this all plays together with immigration reform. It’s about us coming together, and fairness for the community and for the people.”
Real called reform efforts a working class struggle that involves both African Americans and immigrants.
“Martin Luther King, he was trying to unite the people,” Real said. “And that’s what I want to do – unite the people.”

Should Governor Paul LePage run for President?
Paul LePage is the new governor of the state of Maine.
After a long string of forgettable governors men who didnt stand for much, with accomplishments to match -- LePage may (just may) be different.
HOW HE BECAME GOVERNOR;
Last spring there were eight candidates in the Republican primary. Most of them were party hacks. The only one who generated any enthusiasm with the partys base was LePage.
The upshot was that although he was outspent 10 to 1 by his closest rival, he won with 38 percent of the vote.
One reason he appealed to the grass roots was that he had a real-life job (rather than a law school degree followed by a political career.)
Another reason for LePages appeal is his compelling life story. The second oldest of 18 kids in a French-speaking family (Maine has a sizable Franco-American population), he left home at the age of 11 to escape an abusive father.
He lived on the streets for two years and then, at 13, began a long string of jobs: hauling boxes for a trucking company and working in a meat-packing plant, as well as short order cook and bartender.
As he got older, he knew he had to get an education to get ahead in life; so he applied to a local college. But his English was poor and his verbal SAT score was just as poor, so he was rejected.
It was at this point that Providence intervened with a touch of irony. Peter Snowe, the first husband of Olympia Snowe (presently Maines senior U.S. Senator, and a dedicated feminist) persuaded the college to give LePage the verbal test in French.
The rest is history. LePage was accepted, mastered English and became editor of the student newspaper. He went on to get an MBA, and in 2006 the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce named him businessman of the year.
As general manager of Mardens Surplus & Salvage a string of stores throughout Maine selling surplus goods, where you can find just about anything at a decent price; LePage knows how the real economy works.
He became famous (or notorious) for saying that when he became Governor, "you can expect to see newspaper headlines saying, LePage tells Obama to go to hell.
Since being inaugurated, LePage has continued to alarm the political establishment, and as best as I can tell, he doesnt do so as a ploy (unlike some well-known politicians).
Last month he was expected to attend some events on the Martin Luther King holiday. Having other commitments, he declined. When challenged, he said he would not be "held hostage" by special interest groups.
At this, the media (not just in Maine) went bonkers. The NAACP announced they wanted LePage to meet with their representatives. To which LePage replied to reporters, "Tell them they can kiss my butt."
The media generally neglected to mention that LePage was laughing when he said this. They also forgot to mention that a Black youth from Jamaica, Devon Raymond, Jr., has been an adopted member of LePages household for years.
Its known that LePage wants to reduce regulations that stifle business. He wants to reduce the income tax (make it flat) as well as reduce the excise tax on automobiles.
Its difficult not to be cynical about those who run for public office. Over the years weve been disappointed and betrayed by so many.
Some have been secret traitors. Others were simpletons and dupes. Others sold out, for the money and the fame and the perks.
Then there are those who want to do the right thing, at first, but crumble under pressure.
The elite have plenty of sticks as well as carrots. If you cross them, they can punish you. If you become enough of a threat, they may ruin you, or kill you, so its no real surprise that many give up after awhile.
LePage looks like a survivor to me, and he looks like a man who would fight for his people.
Whether that will prove true, I dont know. But he may (just may) be one of those rare men who is actually NOT another puppet for you know who.
LOL
All thoughts welcome.

Is Stephen Colbert really married? perhaps... Suppressed closeted gay stuff as part of his act?
So i cant decide if he says things as part of his act or if any of it is true. He always claims to be married and has children to his guests when he wants to puff up his masculinity but who knows if that is even true...
Then many times he will say things that are so gay but perhaps like even he (character) doesnt even know it. I am trying to decide if it is part of his act because there are so many closeted anti-gay, gay republicans or if he does it to allude to he or his character being gay.
For example, tonight he introduced the new mascot for Martin Luther King day because it needed a mascot like Santa or the Easter Bunny. He had this well defined male model without any visible clothing as the mascot giving a bullet point list of holiday events. At the end he had the model flex and Colbert says "Wow... The things Ive volunteered to do for that man..."
It always makes me wonder what parts are or are not acts!
Answer: It's for comedy. Part of it is satire of the closeted anti-gay Republicans, and part of it is simply the fun of making gay jokes (since he did it on The Daily Show as well, where he wasn't portraying "Stephen" as seen on TCR).
That being said, he is a pretty awesome guy, and I adore his very close relationship with buddy Jon Stewart, and the way he isn't scared to portray gay and play with it.
For those of us who like to fantasize that he's gay/bisexual, there's always real person slash fiction:

Why dont whites celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day?
I am very sad. I am a 22 year old white female. I have always gone to the Martin Luther King Jr Parade, and participated in other events which were sorrounded by the civil rights movement. The sad thing is that when I go to the parades, I never see other whites there. I have wondered why. Many of the whites want to take advantage of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday by not going to work, or school, but not once do they think to participate in the MLK activities.
Fellow whites, why do you do this? Do you think that MLK day is not important? Dont you realize that not only did MLK bring about changes for this country, but helped us all realize that we can all live together equally. However I see many whites at other parades, and activities. But its like they believe that MLK day is only for blacks. However many people benefited from this, including blacks and whites. What do you think?
Answer: SWEETIE, MLK IS NOT A BLACK HOLIDAY! HE FOUGHT FOR EVERYONE!

Is Palin the final nail in the coffin of McCains presidential campaign?
DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press ---
By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesnt see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.
And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret.
"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that hes palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCains ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.
In her character attack, Palin questions Obamas association with William Ayers, a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground. Her reference was exaggerated at best if not outright false.
John McCain occasionally says he looks back on decisions with regret. He has apologized for opposing a holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. He has apologized for refusing to call for the removal of a Confederate flag from South Carolinas Capitol.
When the 2008 campaign is over will McCain say he regrets appeals such as Palins?
Answer: Without a doubt. Palin has been listening to Sean Hannity too Much.
This Ayers thing is such a desperate attempts to discredit the best candidate to come onto the scene in a generation. They are grasping at straws.
Is Ayers terrorizing people now? No he's been working to IMPROVE the education system in this country for the past 20 years.
