Flustered Obama a Wee Bit Touchy During Dog Days
Joseph Curl
Mired in the summer of his discontent, President Obama on Thursday coined a new phrase for the absurdity of a Washington August, when lawmakers and lobbyists vacation outside the Beltway but pollsters and chatterers go right on polling and chattering.
"Theres something about August going into September where everybody in Washington gets all wee-weed up," the worlds most powerful man observed. "I dont know what it is, but thats what happens."
So, it made perfect sense that, during wee weed Washingtons "silly season," the president took to the conservative radio airwaves to declare that he wants a bipartisan fix for Americas health care system and that a federal takeover is just "an option." Mr. Obama then spent some time with a group of die-hard campaign supporters, telling them, "Were going to win this debate. ... Lets go get em!"
Just seven months in office, the legendarily cool Mr. Obama is in the throes of a summer meltdown. Massive opposition to his sweeping proposal to overhaul Americas health care system has prompted the normally unflappable president to lose his cool, and, on a bizarre but blisteringly hot day in the nations capital, to strike back at the far right and stoke up the far left.
The day opened with Mr. Obama sitting down with Michael Smerconish in the White House Diplomatic Reception Room, an appropriate venue for a presidential interview with a conservative radio talk-show host who broke ranks and endorsed the Democratic candidate in 2008.
Under a portrait of George Washington and in front of a cozy fireplace, the two engaged in a 25-minute diplomatic exchange, with the friendly host firing off courteous questions. But the president took the rare opportunity to revive charges of a right-wing conspiracy -- just the kind of rhetorical overkill that was used by first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton at the height of the Monica Lewinsky affair.
Mr. Obama referred himself to Mrs. Clintons earlier woes trying, as he is now, to pass a big, complicated health care overhaul.
"I think early on, a decision was made by the Republican leadership that said, Look, lets not give him a victory, maybe we can have a replay of 1993, 94, when [Bill] Clinton came in, he failed on health care and then we won in the midterm elections and we got the majority. And I think there are some folks who are taking a page out that playbook," he said.
But, mindful of his audience, Mr. Obama said he would "love to have more Republicans engaged and involved in this process," and even said he had sought input from the party now dwelling somewhere in the deep wilderness.
"As far as negotiations with Republicans, my attitude has always been, Lets see if we can get this done with some consensus," he said, seemingly unaware that the Republicans appear to be just a wee bit wee-weed off at him.
Even though conservatives have been up in arms over the presidents health care proposal, none apparently made it through on the radios call-in shows screeners. "Could you please quickly list five or six bullet points of what legislation must include for you to be willing to sign it?" one caller asked; "Im a supporter, worked hard for you last year," said another before asking a softball question.
"Great question," Mr. Obama said.
But the presidents bipartisan tone changed just an hour later, when he visited the Democratic National Committee headquarters downtown for a rally designed to re-energize campaign activists who helped elect him.
"Instead of being preoccupied with the polls and with pundits and with the cable chatter ... were going to have to cut through a lot of nonsense out there, a lot of absurd claims that have been made about health insurance reform," Mr. Obama said.
Is Obamacare a government takeover? Will immigrants get free health checkups? Will the government be funding abortions? Will there be death panels -- as the president said -- "pulling the plug on Grandma?"
"Now," Mr. Obama said, pausing for several seconds for effect: "Cmon." The packed room cheered.
"Look, we know where these lies are coming from. If you just flick channels and then just stop on -- certain ones -- then youll see, you know, youll see whos propagating this stuff," the president said, drawing laughter with a clear allusion to Fox News.
Still, the PR has been a wee bit brutal. With summer TV in reruns (Tom DeLay wont start dancing with the stars until September), viewers have been deluged with raucous exchanges from town halls across the country. Whats more, pollsters have charted the presidents plummeting approval rating and conservative talk radio -- Mr. Smerconish perhaps excepted - has fed for weeks off the health care debate, with little care as to whether the charges are true.
"Unfortunately, Washington is obsessed with the snap poll ... whats

Does the debate on Friday at 9 p.m. interfere with McCains job or McCains nap time.?
If McCain cant handle flying down to Ole Miss (1 hour flight on his private jet), 1 hour debate, 1 hour flight home. Total 3 hours from 8-11 P.M. because it interferes with his so called work of helping to get 1 bill through senate. Maybe, just maybe this 72 year old man might not be ready to be president, ya think?
And since many of you believe nobody should be campaigning during a crises lets review for a second shall we:
We are in 2 wars right now and have been since McCains campaign began. We have had 2 major natural disasters in Gustav and Ike over the past month. The RNC actually went on during one of these major Hurricanes. Weve been in a crisis situation for the past month.
Why dont you do some reasearch:
1) Find out exactly how often McCain has been at "work" in senate since 4/8/08
2) Find out exactly what "work" any member of the senate will be doing at 9 p.m. on a friday night.
You may, just may, find despite the many major issues economy, war, hurricanes McCain has been campaiging NOT working.
You may also find McCain serves on no economic special committies, and that nothing will be going on for him to do at 9 p.m. the time of the debate.
My advice to him, stay at home take your cialis put on your adult diaper and have a nice little nap.
This is purely a political ploy out of the Bush/Rove playbook, in my opinion, what do you think?
Answer: As an older Independent....I agree with you....nothing but a political game and seems like this is McCain first more than anything else.
Given his statements yesterday, he managed to keep two interviews last night, and the official website states on it's event list...the debate...and the 'donate now' buttons are still up and running....Quite different from what he stated yesterday....
If he hoped to prove what a leader he is...for me, this behavior only showed how irratic he is...and seems to speak to his own words from his book, he's filled with nothing more than ambition....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBKj5Wx1DbY
The Gov of Mississippi just gave a press conference, welcoming visitors, telling sites to visit and see while there, and they look forward to tomorrow night, "it will be a great debate".....
The Debate Commission has also stated that there will be no rescheduling of the debates....
I found Senator McCain's attempt at trying to reschedule tomorrow's debate to be held on Oct 2nd, thereby canceling out the VP debate to be put up for rescheduling, to speak to the obvious....
This is all game....and at this point, this country doesn't need that....

Currency Manipulator is a term used by American Politicians from the playbook of how can we fool them now?
Have you heard from the main stream media about American Politicians accusing China of "currency manipulation" of the Chinese Yuan? Just yesterday during the Republican Debate, Mitt Romney, the current leader in the presidential campaign said, if elected president, "I will label China is a currency manipulator.......... and we (Americans) should slap on tariffs for Chinese imports into the USA"
Where do I begin? Point number one - China and the USA belong to the WTO (World Trade Organization). If you Americans have a problem with the Chinese on Trade, then why dont you walk the talk, and deal with it within the framework at the WTO? Could it be, you Amercans, really dont have a case to be made? But "talk" against the Chinese makes good "politics"? Hate Chinese makes good politics? Those slant eye short dirty corrupt people? I think its more of an American being an American. What is that? A phony, a person who bluffs alot, not moral fiber!!! Such values come out of World War two when the Public Relations Job came to being, where reality is what you say it it! USA is an empire of illusions. Came out of the production of commercials that tell people what they ought to feel. And here, we see it in Presidential Campaigns. A whole lot of bull, personality popularity contest, and what makes a good president is how you can speak english and make counterpoints are sound good? Are these traits what is important to run this country? So sad, no wonder USA is in such low esteem both economics and culture. Bottom of the barrel folks!!!
Here is the point: The Chinese can manage their currency as they see fit. If you Americans dont like the "low" currency compared to the mighty dollar, then how about returning all the low priced items you bought at Walmart? Now, you consumers need to learn, that if you want low price items, then the chinese currency will have to be low compared to the dollar. If you dont like the low chinese currency, then why dont you stop buying goods from china? You know, the East Bay Bridge being built from San Francisco to the East Bay is built by the Chinese in Shanghai. You Americans decided to take advantage of the production facilities in CHina and the lower cost of labor. No one put a gun to your head to give the jobs to the chinese. So dont blame them!!!
Another point about this term "currency manipulation". I can say Quantitative Easing #1 and #2 by Bernakee is the same thing is "currency manipulation", but yet, do you hear the Biased White Bubble American Media use this term? Yes, folks Americans manipulate currency, but they give it a fancy name like Quantitative Easing. Different name, same thing. By the way, each country can do what it thinks is best in how to manage their own countries affairs, so maybe the usa should mind their own business when they are no longer a model to follow. I wonder if there arrogance will ever be gone, I doubt it.
No you hear Americans talk about all the pollution in china, all the poverty, and so on and on. Well, no too long from now, there will be more chinese billionaires and millionaires than those on america. Yes, their is poverty in china, the chinese government does not deny that. But what about you Americans? You call yourself a first power, yet you still have poverty too. And you also have people carrying guns everywhere with gun deaths all the time, in addition, you also have drug addicts running rampant in every community. With a prison population in CA larger than college students. What kind of first power country do you have? A lame one folks.
Either pay more for what you buy or shut up and stop blaming the chinese for your miserable problems that your government can not solve for you. We chinese love our government and they kick your ass so far. hahahahaha. Arrogant Americans, sour grapes, your century is over. You WW One and WW Two easy life dividend is over. Just thank your baby boomer generation for living a life based on debt and instant gratification, your time is up, pay now or die!!!!! hahahahaha.
Answer: Its very hard to see how this is all going to end. Yes, America is finished. It's just a matter of time before it all falls apart and there is martial law in America. China will be soon afterwards though when the their housng bubble pops. It's time for all people in the world to stand up for ourselves. They can only push us so far. Bankers rule the world. Our polticians take all their funding from big businesses and so the government makes decisions that make the rich richer, and the poor poorer. The money system is a scam:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dmPchuXIXQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ6hg1oNeGE
I don't know if this happens in China, but I know you have some other pretty big problems. I went to China in 2009 and was planning on living there for a few years. At the time I felt your government was improving and treating you less like children, but then they went and blocked all English websites so I changed my mind. People all across the world need to rise up. We need a global revolution. But I dont think it will happen in China as you guys seem like such happy and obedient slaves.

Republicans Decry Tactics the Party Used Last Year
By JENNIFER STEINHAUER
Yes, it’s true, Republican House freshmen say, our party did help storm town-hall-style meetings to protest changes in the Medicare plan during the debate over the health care overhaul. But they would appreciate it if Democrats did not take that page from their playbook.
On Wednesday, 11 newly elected representatives held a news conference outside the Capitol to promote a letter sent to President Obama and signed by 42 freshmen Republicans asking him “join us to stop the political rhetoric” surrounding their Medicare proposal. In asking the president to work with them to untangle the issues facing massive entitlement programs, the letters further implores Mr. Obama to “condemn the disingenuous attacks and work with this Congress to reform” the programs.
Repeatedly, the members called for a “fact-based conversation” and criticized Democrats for filling town-hall-style meetings with political operatives and citizens who complained – often loudly – about the Republican proposal on Medicare at constituent meetings over the Easter recess. The Republican proposal would convert Medicare into a program that would subsidize future retirees in private insurance plans.
The freshmen conceded that Republicans used similar organized tactics during the health care debate over the summer of 2009, when Tea Party organizers and Republican groups spoke out against the overhaul.
“I’m not going to defend anything in the past,” said Representative Adam Kinzinger, a freshman from Illinois, who led the news conference calling on Democrats to stop their public critique of the plan. “Let’s get passed the past.”
Representative Nan Hayworth of New York, a former doctor, said that it was time to “have a civilized conversation,” and said her class was “standing ready to work with the president.”
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which has helped steer voters to town-hall-style meetings, was quick to jump on the issue. “House Republican freshmen used false and misleading scare tactics against seniors last year but are now afraid of the truth,” said Jesse Ferguson, a spokesman for the committee.
He pointed out that some members who signed the letter supported the protests in 2009, and pointed to Representative Renee Ellmers of North Carolina, who before running for office last year took part in “Hands Off My Health Care,” a movement against the health care law organized by the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.
“Health care and Obamacare is why she got involved in politics in the first place,” said Thomas Doheny, a spokesman for Ms. Ellmers. ”Basically it is one of those things where we want an open debate and try to make sure when we have these things the correct information is out there.”

Is newly-indicted Karl Roves influence being felt in this election?
June 30 (New Republic): "A McCain presidency would promise to dismantle the whole Rovian method that has torn open such a deep wound in the national psyche."
From The New York Times Editorial Page, yesterday: "On July 3, news reports said Senator John McCain, worried that he might lose the election before it truly started, opened his doors to disciples of Karl Rove... Less than a month later, the results are on full display. The candidate who started out talking about high-minded, civil debate has wholeheartedly adopted Mr. Roves low-minded and uncivil playbook."
From The New York Times today: "After spending much of the summer searching for an effective line of attack against Senator Barack Obama, Senator John McCain is beginning a newly aggressive campaign to define Mr. Obama as arrogant, out of touch and unprepared for the presidency. . . . Mr. McCain’s campaign is now under the leadership of members of President Bush’s re-election campaign... The run of attacks against Mr. Obama over the last couple of weeks have been strikingly reminiscent of that drive, including the Bush teams tactics of seeking to make campaigns referendums on its opponents -- not a choice between two candidates -- and attacking the opponents perceived strengths head-on."
Theres obviously nothing surprising about the McCain campaigns reliance on the standard, personality-based attacks that the GOP uses every election year. Its long been obvious that McCains only prospect for winning would be to move the election away from debates over issues (where his positions are widely rejected by the public) and instead demonize Barack Obama as an effete, elitist, effeminate, far Leftist, terrorist-loving radical, and it was equally obvious that McCain would eagerly employ those Rovian tactics.
READ THE ARTICLE: http://tinyurl.com/6z2q8u
Answer: Karl Rove hasn't been indicted, and he probably won't be. One committee of Congress has voted to recommend indictment to the full Congress. Only the full Congress can indict for contempt of Congress. Pelosi (who is supposedly so liberal) has already tabled the committee's recommendation, so it won't come to a vote on the floor.
So your whole question is based on a false understanding of what happened to Rove.

So, in 08, will it be a Democrat who voted for the war, versus a Republican who didnt?
It sure looks that way. How ironic!!!!! It kind of eliminates the issue from the Democrat playbook - I mean, every time Hillary Clinton brings up the issue in a debate, Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani can just respond - right, and of the two of us on this stage, YOURE the one who VOTED for the war!
So, unless Mitt Romney ever took money from Abramoff, has had any involvement with Foley or has ever said "Macaca" - it looks like the GOP will retain the White House.....
g thats stupid - theyd vote no today only because we didnt walk in and win in six weeks - - - that reflects only on their lack of fortitude.
Im not saying the war was a good idea or a bad idea, but lets not pretend the Democrats are now against it for reasons of principle - theyre against it because its not going as planned and it is now unpopular.
If everything had gone hunky dory then regardless of finding WMDs, the Democrats would still favor the war.

Should we end campaign rallies as Hillary advocates?
"Since when do Democrats attack each other on universal health care? I thought we were trying to realize Harry Trumans dream . . . Just because Senator Obama chose not to present a universal health care plan, does not give him the right to attack me because I did. So, lets have a real campaign. Enough with the speeches, and the big rallies, and then using tactics that are right of Karl Roves playbook. This is wrong, and every Democrat should be outraged. Because this is the kind of attack that not only undermines core Democratic values, but gives aid and comfort to the very special interests and their allies in the Republican Party who are against doing what we want to do for America. So shame on you, Barack Obama. It is time you ran a campaign consistent with your messages in public. Thats what I expect from you. Meet me in Ohio. Reality shows frequently allow ten to as many as twenty contestants, Debates rarely have more than Six, totally dishing other creditable candidates. Wouldnt it be a true test of skill to decorate a family bomb shelter reflecting true Teapublican values in under six hours? All sorts of talents can possibly stir up the pot, imagine how Herman Cain might shine during a "Sing Off of Patriotic Airs, while perennial favorite Ron Paul might stun everyone with a Patriotic Pole Dance? And taking a page from the Dick Chaney playbook, who can endure water-boarding the most times in an hour????
