Re Sept 8th: Do you agree with this school board letter "Is this dictatorial-like political indoctrination"?
Here is the body of letter [personal info redacted] I just dispatched to my own School District Superintendent and School Board Members:
Dear Doctor ______,
Barack Obama has announced that he wishes to address all school students on September 8th. It is reported that his staff has sent out letters to School Principals nationwide. They have prepared "educational" program material to go along with this.
Creepily and ominously the letter and the lesson plan material do NOT mention what the topic of the speech is to be. Yet the lesson plans make clear that Obama demands -- for to say that a man in such an office "strongly desires" something carries to the force of a strict command from regular folk. Barack Obama thus demands that the students should agree with what he says, find that it is important and act upon it.
My strong recommendation as a concerned citizen resident in this school district is that the district NOT participate in such an event, because the topic and subjects to be discussed are unknown.
For an everyday example we all know that as responsible adults it is unwise to allow oneself to be subjected to a sales pitch for time shares at some vacation resort or some multilevel marketing scheme. Why? Because as a captive audience it is tough not to have our minds stolen to some degree by the sales pitch or the con -- and lets face it, many of those things are cons.
If Mr. Obama wishes to address this group of our community let it be NOT as some captive audience. The children in a classroom or auditorium have no choice but to sit through such a speech. Nor is it wise or responsible for an adult in charge of such vulnerable young minds and spirits to allow anyone free access to them in a captive situation such as a classroom or auditorium without first reviewing and approving the lesson plan. A plan that MUST INCLUDE the subject to be discussed and what is to be discussed about it.
It is the absence of such statement from Obama about what he intends to discuss that makes this so creepy and ominous. That is why my subject line asked, "Is this dictatorial-like political indoctrination?"
See the Fox News report:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/02/critics-decry-obamas-lesson-plan-students/
I feel it is imperative that the responsible adults in charge of the student body of _________ School District do what is right in this case. And that is to not ever allow such a presentation no matter who asks to make it. Let them provide a video that may be reviewed for content first. And then decide if it is a worthwhile or good thing to do.
Please do not participate in this dictatorial indoctrination on September 8th. That is what it is at this point. Pure dictatorial political indoctrination.
It would be irresponsible to allow it, it would be a dereliction of your duty to the young charges who are your responsibility to protect and to build their intellects, spirits and morals.
Sincerely,
[name]

Background on the national broadcast of the 1991 GHW Bush speech from an eighth-grade classroom at Alice Deal Junior High School ...
The NYT reported: "Democrats assailed the Bush Administration today for spending $26,750 in taxpayer money"
The production was funded from the Education Depts salary and expense budget. Rep. Ford, (D, MI) head of the House Education and Labor Committee, demanded that EdSec Lamar Alexander appear before the committee to defend his "spending scarce education dollars to produce a media event."
Ford threatened to hold up the multibillion-dollar Higher Education Act until he received an explanation.
House majority leader, Gephardt (D, MO) said, "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the President."
Legitimate President GHW Bush spoke about a specific relevant issue of the day. The program was not rushed upon the schools at the time they are the most busy; the schools had time to consider the program.

President GHW Bush gave his speech a month after the first week of school. Oct 1st, 1991.
On September 11th he had given his "New World Order" speech expressing his optimism for a new peaceful way of the world under an expanded role of the UN. That followed the amazingly fast victory in Desert Storm, where he had forged an international coalition.
On October 2nd, the day after that national speech to the schoolchildren, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton announced he was running for President of the United States.
The old cycle! Hubris meets Nemesis!
Thanks PennyLeeD2, you have done a magnificent service to all.
President GHW Bush gave his speech to the assembled schoolchildren of America month after the first week of school. Oct 1st, 1991. So there was not quite the rush of Obamas first week of school presumption.
But President GHW Bushs speech was presumptive. Although it was on a particular subject, such a speech by a President to ALL grades and ALL children in school is never appropriate save for the most dire urgency or emergency. The drug war is neither. The speech was political, yes, although not as much as Obamas is, given circumstances.
At the time Mr, Bush was overflowing with pride. The shared reason of both such speeches to ALL schoolchildren is that old human failing -- hubris.
Answer: looks like O. is trying out some more "purpose driven" BS for the new age.

"I can only hope that the liberal section of our society comes to their senses before they allow their children to be treated like this. ================= Liberals are always bitter clingers when it comes to abandoning a crappy President like Obama and Carter. Don't worry, Independents and Seniors are lining up in droves of disapproval and we're only 7 months in. He can't win another election with only bleeding heart libs supporting him blindly. Independents have already realized their mistake. "

Congresswoman says some senators Neanderthals
Posted: August 24th, 2009 09:26 AM ET
From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
Waters is urging the president to keep the public option plan.
(CNN) -- As President Obama begins his vacation in Marthas Vineyard this week, the fiery debate over health care reform continues to rage.
The latest member of congress to wade into the issue is California Rep. Maxine Waters, a liberal Democrat who at a town hall over the weekend implored the president not to drop the public option plan and said his efforts at bipartisanship are futile.
Watch: Obama pressured on Public Option
"Yes, we know that you are a nice man, that you want to work with the opposite side of the aisle. But there comes a time when you need to drop that and move forward," she said. "Were saying to you, Mr. President, Be tough. Use everything that youve got. Do what you have to do. And we have your back. "
The longtime congresswoman, whose district includes much of Los Angeles, also described some senators who are opposed to the health care reform bill as "Neanderthals."
Answer: Yes. I believe Obama needs to have the same "get it done at any cost" mentality that Bush had. Bush had poor ideas, (deregulation, tax cuts for wealthiest 1%, preemptive war), all of which were passed because he didn't try and please everyone. He did whatever he wanted. Obama has good ideas and needs to have that mentality in order to get it to pass.
I respect Obama trying to compromise and get both sides on board. But by now I think he realizes the Republicans see this as a political fight they must win (not a fight for the American people). They will disagree with whatever he presents, and when he does compromise they say he is weak and flip flops.
I think the name calling "Neanderthals" is uncalled for, but I can see how they are frustrated and ready to accomplish this reform without Republican support.

What do U think San Diego Faces Own Medicine as AZ Residents Cancel Travel Following Boycott Of State?
Arizona tourists are biting back against San Diego for its city councils decision to boycott the Grand Canyon State over its immigration law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer last month.
Would-be tourists have notified the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau and some hotels that they are canceling their scheduled travel to the coastal vacation destination, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
According to the newspaper, the convention bureau has received about 25-30 emails from Arizona residents, with some saying they are canceling their reservations and taking their money elsewhere.
That has tourism officials urging Arizonans to consider the resolutions as merely symbolic and local politics at work.
"Were in a very tough environment already because of everything else going on, and we dont need another negative impact to our industry," ConVis President Joe Terzi told the Union-Tribune. "This affects all the hardworking men and women who count on tourism for their livelihoods, so we’re saying, dont do something that hurts their livelihoods."
"Ive been approached by a number of hotels who are very concerned because they’ve received cancelations from Arizona guests," Namara Mercer, executive director of the county Hotel-Motel Association, told the newspaper.
Roughly 2 million Arizonans visit San Diego each year but the recession has taken a toll on the hotel industry that was hoping for a comeback this year. Hotels are offering deep discounts to fill up their undersold rooms while the tourism board spends $7 million this spring and summer season to promote travel to the area.
Several councils in large cities like Los Angeles, Austin, Boston and San Francisco have approved boycotts on employee travel or future contracts with Arizona businesses as a result of the law that goes into effect on July 1. The state tourism bureau has said the losses so far have reached nearly $10 million as a result of 23 canceled meetings.
But others are cautious, noting unintended consequences. Milwaukee’s city council delayed a vote on a boycott and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said he opposes such action.
On Saturday, former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin appeared with Brewer in Phoenix to criticize President Obama for not passing an immigration law and putting Arizona in the situation where it had to act on its own.
“It’s time for Americans across this great country to stand up and say ‘we’re all Arizonans now, and in clear unity, we say, Mr. President, do your job, secure our borders,’” Palin said.
Palin also has denounced a decision by Highland Park, Ill., officials who canceled the high school girls’ basketball team’s travel to the state in December. Both Highland Park Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson and the Austin City Council suggested that their decisions were less based on politics than concern their players and employees could be in harm’s way if they want to Arizona. Hebson, however, told the Chicago Tribune that she did not know if any student players were themselves illegal immigrants.
Palin, a former basketball player, said she would raise money or find other ways to get the players to the tournament.
Meanwhile, in San Diego, school board President Shelia Jackson said she is sorry people don’t want to come to her city, but she still supports her vote to boycott Arizona.
“It’s sad that people would cancel their plans to come here in reaction to that, but I still think we did the right thing,” Jackson told the Union-Tribune. “Certainly, we know how important tourism is to San Diego, and it wasn’t my intent to impact the tourism trade.”

Answer: I for one will be happy to return to Phoenix now. I have not been there in 3 years. The last time I went I was disgusted in seeing (i'm sure mainly illegals) day laborers on every street, every 50 yards away.
I think it's great that Arizona is getting some support on their decision. Don't those idiot cities that are calling for boycotts realize they are hurting the very people they are sticking up for and others? Obviously, they have not read the bill and understand it.
