It snows every winter, yet every year people forget how to drive in the snow. Why dont drivers get better?
Im voting Chicago and the surrounding area as the nations worst drivers. If there is no snow and its dry they constantly blare their horns and pass you in a hurry to get somewhere. Put a half inch of snow on the ground or a light drizzle of rain and these aggressive drivers are thrown into a slow-driving panic. Why, over time, dont these drivers get better? Why is it, year after year when inclement weather hits does everyone drive horseploop?
Answer: because they are short on brain and patience. Another reason is all that snowtire advertising - they think now they can drive faster.

FACTORY FARMED CHICKEN
Almost all chicken meat in the United States is produced through the "factory farming" system, in which animals are closely crowded together in filthy, disease-ridden conditions. Because of these unhealthy conditions, many chickens die even before they get to the slaughterhouse. For example, in an operation with 100,000 broiler chickens, approximately 250 birds die per day. Before being caught for the trip to the slaughterhouse, food and water are withdrawn; at the slaughterhouse, birds wait in trucks another 1 to 9 hours to be killed, sometimes in very hot or very cold weather.
Chicken is far worse than beef in terms of contamination and bacteria. The Atlanta Constitution reported in 1991: "Every week throughout the South, millions of chickens leaking yellow pus, stained by green feces, contaminated by harmful bacteria, or marred by lung and heart infections, cancerous tumors or skin conditions are shipped to consumers." Salmonella is present in over one-third of all chickens, and many millions of Americans are infected each year. The symptoms of salmonella poisoning are very similar to the flu (though only occasionally fatal), and thus many who are infected may never even be aware of what they have. To prevent these problems, chickens are usually heavily dosed with antibiotics (more than half of all antibiotic use in the U. S. is on factory farms!), but this indiscriminate use of antibiotics in turn helps create resistant strains of salmonella and other disease-causing germs, decreasing the effectiveness of antibiotics to fight human infections.
HEART DISEASE, CANCER, AND MEDICAL COSTS
And even if bacterial contamination were eliminated, we still have the tremendous problems of heart disease and cancer, the leading causes of death in the United States. Repeated efforts to lower cholesterol levels through switching from beef to chicken have ended in failure. Chicken is somewhat lower in fat than beef, but it still contains quite a bit of fat and even more cholesterol per calorie than does beef or pork.
Moreover, meat which is lower in fat is always higher in protein, and excess protein is damaging to health just as is excess fat. Chicken which has 29% of its calories as fat contains 71% of its calories as protein, while ground beef which has 49% of calories of fat has 51% of its calories as protein. In terms of excess protein consumption chicken is worse than beef or pork. Problems caused by or related to excess protein consumption include kidney stones, kidney disease, osteoporosis, bladder cancer, and lymphoma. Chicken meat also completely lacks fiber; lack of fiber is linked to a variety of digestive disorders ranging from constipation to colon cancer. The three basic problems with our American-style diet—too much fat, too much protein, and lack of fiber—are thus all made worse by chicken consumption. Those who switch from beef to chicken are at best trading one set of health hazards for a different set.
Chicken has done little for the nations health. In the past twenty-five years, we have seen a huge increase in poultry consumption; but health care expenditures during the same period showed phenomenal growth, now costing us hundreds of billions of dollars each year in the United States. The "switch" from beef to chicken has evidently had little, if any, effect on rising medical costs.
ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS
Raising chickens affects the environment as well. Feeding grain to chicken may be somewhat less inefficient than feeding grain to cattle, but it is still wasteful—you must feed at least three times the amount of protein, calories, and other nutrients to the chickens in the form of plant foods than you retrieve in animal flesh at the end. Each year millions of children die due to malnutrition or starvation, and yet the Western countries continue to waste this grain by creating more and more chicken flesh.
Moreover, chicken production results in incredible quantities of manure; a one-million hen complex produces 125 tons of wet manure each day. Animal agriculture in the U. S. produces many times more waste products than humans do. In many areas of the country livestock manure causes dangerous contamination of the drinking water due to nitrates. Even when used as a plant fertilizer, chicken manure can cause difficulties, as in Texas several years ago when cantaloupe fertilized with chicken manure caused sickness in human beings. The fault lay not with the cantaloupe but with the disease-ridden chicken manure.
COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS
And what about the effect of the "factory farming" system on the animals themselves? Over 7.5 billion birds are killed each year in the United States. We would probably like to believe that these animals at least lived fairly comfortable lives until they were taken to the slaughterhouse, and would also like to believe that chickens are then quickly and painlessly killed. Unfortunately, this is not true.
Chickens are crowded together in cramped, windowless sheds, and must breathe concentrated excretory ammonia fumes which damage their eyes and lungs. They are mutilated by "debeaking"—the practice of cutting off most of the chickens beak when the chicken is young. The reason for "debeaking" is that without it, chickens in their cramped circumstances would peck each other and even attack and kill each other. Obviously, a chicken which needs to be "debeaked" in the first place is not a happy chicken; and the process of debeaking (akin to partial amputation of a human finger, without anesthesia) is quite painful in itself. Birds are deliberately bred to gain more weight than their legs and feet can support, leading to more pain.
Turkey production is no better than chicken production. Turkeys, like chickens, are kept in intensely overcrowded quarters; they must be heavily dosed with antibiotics, are subject to many diseases, and have their beaks and their toes partially amputated (without anaesthetic, of course). Turkeys over the years have been bred to be fatter and fatter; todays turkey is so overweight that it cannot mate and must be bred through artificial insemination.
"Humanely raised" poultry avoids some of the worst abuses, such as debeaking and overcrowding. But chickens and turkeys are still killed long before their natural lifespan has elapsed, and it still is not a healthful food, as meat from any chicken or turkey—no matter how "humanely" raised—is going to be high in fat or protein (or both), and completely lacking in fiber.
Chickens do not die easy deaths, either. The "humane slaughter" laws do not cover chicken or any other poultry. Slaughterhouses are operated as mechanical "disassembly" lines with as little human intervention as possible. Stunning devices are not required by law, and even where used only 1/3 of the chickens are effectively stunned. Some chickens have their throats slit and bleed to death while fully conscious. Millions of unfortunate chickens also escape the automatic knives that slit their throats, and thus go into the next stage—the scalding tank—alive and fully conscious.
Answer: It is truth. Another problem with buying chicken at the stores, is realizing that chicken parts are THERE, because, often, the other parts of THAT same chicken had cancer. Seriously, cancerous parts get cut out, and the other parts of the chicken do get sold as parts.
I have seen turkey farms that did all those horrible things to the critters.
I have raised my own chickens, and found that, although I was raising them for the eggs produced, that chickens are really filthy to raise in even small numbers. Trying to keep conditions clean for my own chickens was a full time job! I loved having the fresh eggs, they were delicious! I stopped raising my own, for the fresh eggs, when I just could not keep up with how much fecal matter there was to deal with. I only had a few chickens! I had a great house for them, and kept it nice. So, if I couldn't stand just a few of them around, think what it must be like to do it for a living.......the more chickens you have, the more money you make. Dreadful problem.

WASHINGTON – The nations largest banks must undergo new stress tests to show they can weather another recession, and the Federal Reserve said those that pass them can boost dividends paid to investors.
Banks would need to show the Feds bank examiners that theyre in good financial health and that they have adequate capital to absorb potential losses over the next two years.
The Fed oversees Wall Streets biggest banks, including Citigroup, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Wells Fargo.
Banks have to file plans to the Fed showing that they would have sufficient capital cushions to cover any losses under different economic scenarios — including if the economy were to fall back into a recession, Fed officials said.
All of the 19 largest banks overseen by the Fed must file the plans — even if they dont intend to increase their dividend payments. The plans must be filed by Jan. 7, 2011.
The upcoming round of "stress tests" are a key part of the Feds ongoing efforts to make sure that banks — and the entire financial system — are stable. The safety and soundness of the banking system is an important ingredient to the economys health.

UN Climate Panel Accused of Possible Research Fraud?
UN Climate Panel Accused of Possible Research Fraud
At virtually the same time NASAs Goddard Institute for Space Studies was correcting historical climate data with the assistance of Climate Audits Steve McIntyre, a British mathematician discovered serious flaws in papers used and cited by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its most recent Assessment Report.
Douglas J. Keenan, a former Morgan Stanley arbitrageur and current independent mathematical researcher, identified "fabrications" in such studies that suggest a "marked lack of integrity in some important work on global warming that is relied upon by the IPCC" and that "the insignificance of urbanization effects on temperature measurements has not been established as reliably as the IPCC assessment report assumes."
As Keenan stated in his full report concerning this matter (emphasis added throughout):
Meteorological stations sometimes move, and this can affect the temperature measurements of the stations. For example, one of the stations relied upon by the above two papers was originally located on the upwind side of a city and later moved, 25 km, to be on the downwind side of the city. Such a move would be expected to increase the measured temperatures, because a city generates heat. Another station relied upon by the papers was originally located in the center of a city and then moved, 15 km, to be by the shore of a sea. Such a move would be expected to decrease the measured temperatures.
Those that have read the work of Anthony Watts at SurfaceStations.org certainly can understand what Keenan was talking about. He continued:
It is clear that when a station moves, the temperature data from before the move is not, in general, directly comparable to the data from after the move. This problem can occur even if the move is over a small distance. For example, if a station moves from being in the middle of a field to being by an asphalt area, then the measured temperatures would be expected to increase, even though the distance moved might be only 100 m. (A related issue is that the land use around a station can change over time, and this can affect measurements.)
In global warming studies, an important issue concerns the integrity of temperature measurements from meteorological stations. The latest assessment report from the IPCC indicates that the global average temperature rose by roughly 0.3 °C over the period 1954-1983. Thus, if errors in temperature measurements were of similar size to, or larger than, 0.3 °C, there could be a serious problem for global warming studies. The papers of Jones et al. and Wang et al. both consider this issue. The paper of Jones et al. is one of the main 2 works cited by the IPCC to support its contention that measurement errors arising from urbanization are tiny, and therefore are not a serious problem.
With that in mind, the problem Keenan identified was that the papers in question misrepresented the static condition of a large number of weather stations:
Regarding station movements over time, the papers of Jones et al. and Wang et al. make the following statements.
The stations were selected on the basis of station history: we chose those with few, if any, changes in instrumentation, location or observation times. [Jones et al.]
They were chosen based on station histories: selected stations have relatively few, if any, changes in instrumentation, location, or observation times.... [Wang et al.]
Unfortunately, these statements appear to be quite false:
Each paper gives the same reference for its statement: a report resulting from a project done jointly by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The DOE/CAS report (available via http://cdiac.esd.ornl.gov/ndps/ndp039.html) resulted from concern over "possible CO2-induced climate changes". Its purpose was to present "the most comprehensive, long-term instrumental Chinese climate data presently available". It contains, in particular, histories of some Chinese meteorological stations, including the different locations of those stations and the dates on which they moved, if any.
The DOE/CAS report was formally published in full in 1991-Wang et al. and Jones et al. used a pre-publication version of the report. A revised version of the report was published in 1997, but the station histories are the same in the two versions.
Jones et al. and Wang et al. consider the same 84 meteorological stations in China. Regarding 49 of those stations, the DOE/CAS report says, "station histories are not currently available" and "details regarding instrumentation, collection methods, changes in station location or observing times ... are not known" (sect. 5). For those 49 stations, then, the above-quoted statements from the two papers are impossible.
Shocking. But there was more:
Regarding the remaining 35 stations that were analyzed by the two papers, I have prepared a summary of the relevant information from the DOE/CAS report. The summary is available at http://www.informath.org/apprise/a5620/b17.htm. As an example from the summary, one station had five different locations during 1954-1983, with the locations as much as 41 km apart. Two other stations each had four different locations. At least half the stations had substantial moves (two other examples, of 25 km and 15 km, were given above). Moreover, several stations have histories that are inconsistent, making reliable analysis unattainable.
(The station that moved five times during the study period, #54511, is discussed by Yan et al. [Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 18: 309 (2001)]; the authors conclude that some of the moves affected temperature measurements by 0.4 °C. The authors also discuss another station, #58367, which had a single move of 4 km; the authors conclude that the move affected temperature measurements by 0.3 °C. The authors statistical analysis, though, is invalid-e.g. it does not consider significance-so the conclusions are unproven.)
Additionally, the following statement from the DOE/CAS report seems apposite: "Few station records included in the PRC data sets can be considered truly homogeneous [i.e. have no significant changes in location, instrumentation, etc.]. Even the best stations were subject to minor relocations or changes in observing times, and many have undoubtedly experienced large increases in urbanization."
The essential point here is that the quoted statements from Jones et al. and Wang et al. cannot be true and could not be in error by accident. The statements are fabricated.
Readers are encouraged to review Keenans entire report, as well as the summary available at his website Informath.org, to make their own conclusions.
However, as errors in data collection and dissemination - be they innocent or intentional - continue to surface in reports crucial to the opinion of the IPCC and global warming alarmists around the world, it seems reasonable to conclude that not only isnt the debate over as folks like soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore continually avow, it has only just begun.
Answer: Gee I never thought there was fraud involve or bad data. I always thought it was arrogance that we could effect such a change in the climate of the planet.

Whats really happening?
Im a very curious person and wanted to share different ideas and get different opinions about subjects. I wont go into too much depth but for who has some prior knowledge can shed some more light on the subjects for me. Thanks
Ive read different articles about 9/11 being an inside job, and explosive materials found by FEMA in the rubble of the twin towers, and the WTC building that wasnt hit by planes and collapsed for no reason. I read about operation northwoods(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods) which was a false flag operation that called for CIA agents to commit genuine acts of terrorism on U.S. cities and elsewhere. Operation Northwoods included proposals for hijackings and bombings followed by the introduction of phony evidence that would implicate the Cuban government. Luckily Kennedy wouldnt sign it, and it never happened. He was later killed, coincidence? So if this was proposed in 1962 but never happened, do you think G.W. Bush would have signed something like this? makes you wonder.
Did aliens really come in contact with ancient Egyptians? If you have time take a moment to look at this youtube video.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxankFWaRFc)
Is their really a New World Order? People who run our governments and have so much power they can control most things that happen?
Can the Military control the weather? I read an article that said in one of the United Nations policy or laws that it says no country will manipulate anothers weather by any means. Is that proof that their are ways to control weather? HAARP?
Do you believe in Aliens? Im not sure if i do, but didnt the Egyptians write on walls and tell stories about the sky gods that came down and shared different things with them? If aliens were to have come down again, they were probably shot down or shot at and wouldnt want to come back. who knows, just a theory. Doesnt religion automatically disqualify their being life on other planets? Is it possible that religion was created to control the masses?(dont be mad at me for saying that)
Answer: I also once had thoughts but now I have narrowed it down to a strong theory with new reforming or building thoughts
If one reads the Religious texts it speaks clearly of Life being everywhere in different forms EVEN rivalries with one god and his clan and the next. Religion once TAUGHT Super-Sciences and Morality it was those later with Greed Aspirations(e.g. Knights Templar was religious but collided with the greed rich of the french king!) that used it to quell the next gallileo or the next Renaissance. Today though they have better opiates!- Oprah's, Cruises, Ice and Ectasy, TV, Beer, Footy etc
The Mahabrata, the Vedas, The Egyptian Pyramid Texts even The Bible point towards The gods having powers starting life and most of all contact with this world in many cases
I think the better qn could be - Did the Egyptians come from contact with the Aliens or Higher Gods?
Did the Mayas? Did the Incas? Did the Machu Pichu people in particular with their knowledge? Did the Nordics? Did the Easter Island people? Did the Ancient Chinese? Did the Hindus?
But its not all THOUGHT!!! There is more evidence to argue for this then you would believe!
I know people whom I would trust my life with that have seen at a 20-50m distance a large UFO in 1960's in NSW Australia! They are there, if that satisfies your curiosity
All this can be found AND More for doubters, lost minded skeptics, believers and neutrals on dr.greers Disclosure Project, von Daeniken's books and nick pope's open skies closed minds
Now Politics - New World Order does in some even many ways control our thinking if we allow them and our govts if again we allow them. Take today mass media controlled by 2 big parties alp or libs whom misinform and deluded the working Aussie - I believe the same can and does occur in america and certaintly in Foreigner/Do-Gooder ruled BRITAIN! Its purpose - to control profits and pursuade on a daily basis the Worker to not revolt or strike or pack up and leave. Its also used to control legislation which in the mining tax part helped Mr.Palmer(leech) and his Rio Tinto cronies from the terror of giving to the people some $ for destroying their LAND
Who does the New World Order consist of? - The Wealthy, The Foreigner Wealthy in some cases(jews alike) and puppet politicians.
What people dont Realise is that The Policies a Government makes dictates the lives and conditions of living you will live? Want proof if your an African then you dont have to move a muscle!
If your an Aussie it could be the same or look to the Abo or homeless or struggling impoverished low working families! If your a Yank look at the millions in homelessness and those millions more continually losing their houses and jobs in the FREE AMERICA
But... look to Norway - Where you can live well, you can get a job, you can go to University without taking a oath of slavery to the banks or us doodle army! And why because their govt doesnt take shit from anyone and Most of All has high tax that works straight back for their citizens
And note: Norway is not a member of the EU!!!
If Every Nation declared themselves out of the World Trade Organisation and co whom can control the agenda of nations(go and ask South America/Africa) if they dont let the UN or their stupid Refugee Charter(go and ask me about it!) and if they Focus Honestly and Decisively in maintaining their National Soverignty and Self-Sufficiency(peoples and economy) then this New World Order the trans-national leecher will be removed from our worries
Finally on these other things - 9/11 could have been done by the Jews Mossad lost 600 arrested agents 6 months in USA following the attacks. They had every reason and 2 Israeli water corps occupy the Iraqi rivers today! It could have been hit by a rocket locally they scatter the damage critically fracturing the building and the planes do the rest. Osama thinking he has struck the victory proclaims and the Jews move the Queen to the Middlegame!
Kennedy is all possibilities - Some say USSR/USA peace, some say Cuba, some say KGB, even the mafia its unknown and apart from Historical purposes and talk I dont know really if has much relevance today. On the Bush chap he was a dummy whom in his own good intentions for us oil and dominance over their enemies entered a Iraq his father could have won but he could only lose. There was however the disclosure project announced for us congress testifying in Mar 2001 at the us press club - it is possible the 9/11 and terror business could convenietly ignore the massing evidence and pressure
Its all a game of chess and unless each nation and its native peoples does something about will continue as mere pawns...

or in your opinion people are not slowing down on rain slick roads. I thought that the tires on cars would pretty much check sliding and hydro-planing at highway speeds? Are roads more oily, now than in the past, due to global warming. lol. What do you think?
Answer: No, poor drivers who don't know the capabilities and limits of their vehicles are.
Instead, they are lulled into a false sense of security by their vehicle having so-called "safety features" like air bags, crumple zones and On-Star(for when they do crash-not if they do).

The Bottleneck
Delays are a fact of life at New Yorks three main airports. Each day, thousands of passengers are stuck on planes at the airports -- Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark Liberty International -- sitting in line behind a dozen other planes waiting to take off or circling overhead until they get clearance to land. And the delays persist, despite changes - Flight delays at New Yorks main airports--Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark Liberty--were as bad as ever in 2011 and impact of delays rippled across the country, despite changes in procedures and airline schedules; regions airspace handled 12 percent of all domestic flights in first half of 2011, but accounted for nearly half of all delays in the nation. If you believe Gore you will believe anything?
We are living in strange times. One exceptionally warm winter is enough - irrespective of the fact that in the course of the 20th century the global temperature increased only by 0.6 per cent - for the environmentalists and their followers to suggestradical measures to do something about the weather, and to do it right now.
In the past year, Al Gores so-called "documentary" film was shown in cinemas worldwide, Britains - more or less Tony Blairs - Stern report was published, the fourth report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was put together and the Group of Eight summit announced ambitions to do something about the weather. Rational and freedom-loving people have to respond. The dictates of political correctness are strict and only one permitted truth, not for the first time in human history, is imposed on us. Everything else is denounced.
The author Michael Crichton stated it clearly: "the greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda". I feel the same way, because global warming hysteria has become a prime example of the truth versus propaganda problem. It requires courage to oppose the "established" truth, although a lot of people - including top-class scientists - see the issue of climate change entirely differently. They protest against the arrogance of those who advocate the global warming hypothesis and relate it to human activities.
As someone who lived under communism for most of his life, I feel obliged to say that I see the biggest threat to freedom, democracy, the market economy and prosperity now in ambitious environmentalism, not in communism. This ideology wants to replace the free and spontaneous evolution of mankind by a sort of central (now global) planning.
The environmentalists ask for immediate political action because they do not believe in the long-term positive impact of economic growth and ignore both the technological progress that future generations will undoubtedly enjoy, and the proven fact that the higher the wealth of society, the higher is the quality of the environment. They are Malthusian pessimists.
The scientists should help us and take into consideration the political effects of their scientific opinions. They have an obligation to declare their political and value assumptions and how much they have affected their selection and interpretation of scientific evidence.
Does it make any sense to speak about warming of the Earth when we see it in the context of the evolution of our planet over hundreds of millions of years? Every child is taught at school about temperature variations, about the ice ages, about the much warmer climate in the Middle Ages. All of us have noticed that even during our life-time temperature changes occur (in both directions).
Due to advances in technology, increases in disposable wealth, the rationality of institutions and the ability of countries to organise themselves, the adaptability of human society has been radically increased. It will continue to increase and will solve any potential consequences of mild climate changes.
I agree with Professor Richard Lindzen from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who said: "future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st centurys developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and, on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a roll-back of the industrial age".
The issue of global warming is more about social than natural sciences and more about man and his freedom than about tenths of a degree Celsius changes in average global temperature.
As a witness to todays worldwide debate on climate change, I suggest the following:
*Small climate changes do not demand far-reaching restrictive measures
*Any suppression of freedom and democracy should be avoided
*Instead of organising people from above, let us allow everyone to live as he wants
*Let us resist the politicisation of science and oppose the term "scientific consensus", which is always achieved only by a loud minority, never by a silent majority
*Instead of speaking about "the environment", let us be attentive to it in our personal behaviour
*Let us be humble but confident in the spontaneous evolution of human society. Let us trust its rationality and not try to slow it down or divert it in any direction
*Let us not scare ourselves with catastrophic forecasts, or use them to defend and promote irrational interventions in human lives.
Answer: For every scientist that believes climate change is "no big deal", about 99 think it is a serious and urgent problem.
Are you telling me you know something climatologists, zoologists, geologists, biologists, chemists and a whole host of other scientists who are confirming climate change more and more every day don't?

Why dont we hear about the record cold in the Southern Hemisphere?
South America is experiencing a record cold not felt in 100 years.
Temperatures plunged to -22C in parts of Argentina, while snow fell on Buenos Aires.
In Chile, temperatures dropped to -18C.
In Bolivia, heavy snowfall blocked the nations main motorway and forced the closure of several airports.
Bitterly cold weather in May caused some 20 deaths and forced the Argentine authorities to ration supplies.
A South American cold snap is causing Chileans to pay up to four times more for heat and electricity
Clearly this cold is not consistent with the consensus. This is supposed to be GLOBAL warming, not backyard warming.
This shows that the Earth has been cooling over the last few years, and co2 is not causing warming.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6286484.stm
http://www.petroleumworld.com/sati07081101.htm
Bob - South America is experiencing multi year of far below average temperatures. As always, and typical of believers, you just make statements of half truths and obfuscated information without backing up your claims.
Just like any other data, you dismiss the data, and people who dont agree with you. Global warming is selective science to weed out the data to give you the results you desire. This is why the IPCC reports are negotiated by politicians.
Global warming is a farce. The temps are cooling down, but then again, you seeonly what you want. This is why science should be objective.
Prove me wrong. Tell us what the climate is going to be in 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years from now, and show us your work to how you got to that conclusion.
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.D.txt
Answer: That's just short term weather in one region.
This is global climate:
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.A2.lrg.gif
"This shows that the Earth has been cooling"? Global warming doesn't mean every day in every place is warmer. No reputable scientific "skeptic" claims the Earth is cooling.
Do you not understand the difference between short term weather and climate? Do you think this is going to convince people that "skeptics" have really good arguments?
EDIT - jim z - When have you ever seen me say short term warming somewhere is proof? I've often said it isn't. The long term NASA data is proof.
EDIT - Jello - OK. In five years the five year global average temperature will be warmer. There is no doubt about that. Proof:
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.A2.lrg.gif
http://www.globalwarmingart.com/wiki/Image:Climate_Change_Attribution.png
http://scrippsco2.ucsd.edu/graphics_gallery/mauna_loa_record/mlo_record.html
You may not accept the proof. But you won't be able to find a "skeptical" scientist who will bet against me.
In 2005, Annan offered to take Lindzen, the MIT meteorologist, up on his bet that global temperatures in 20 years will be cooler than they are now. However, no wager was ever settled on because Lindzen wanted odds of 50-to-1 in his favor.
“Richard Lindzen’s words say that there is about a 50 percent chance of [global] cooling,” Annan wrote about the bet. “His wallet thinks it is a 2 percent shot. Which do you believe?”
I dismiss your data, because it's short term in one location. No other reason.
EDIT Mark G - No scientist on this site has cited short term weather as proof. We've pointed out that that's a mistake. Examples:

Can individual weather events, like the recent cold weather, be linked to global warming?
Do record snow storms, cold spells etc mean the earth is getting cooler and do record heatwaves and droughts mean the earth is getting warmer?
I thought that they were separate things (i.e. weather and climate) but apparently a lead author of the IPCC said, following the heatwave of 2003, that: [QUOTE]
"I think there are very good reasons to believe that the current U.S. heat wave is at least partly caused by global warming," Kevin Trenberth, one of the nations top global-warming computer modelers, wrote in an e-mail.
The same article quotes the climatologist, Michael Mann as saying ""As we see more and more such record-breaking extremes," Mann said, "we can increasingly implicate climate change for the shift. This holds for heat waves, droughts and intense tropical storms"
And a third climate researcher adds ""What is worrisome," said Claudia Tebaldi, a climate statistician who works at the Boulder research center, "is that climate models all agree on the intensification of heat waves in the future."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, please help, i am *genuinely* confused here. Can individual weather events be ascribed to global warming / climate change or not?
source for quotes was the San Francisco Chronicle. Link:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/07/25/MNGGRK4TLT1.DTL
Answer: No!
... unless you can show that the type of event is increasing or decreasing, in frequency or intensity, when compared to the historical average, then you could say that the climate is changing. and climate changes are a predicted consequence of global warming.
The only way to measure global warming is to measure average GLOBAL temperatures over a decade or so (in order to average out the El Nino/La Nina cycle) and compare to the historical trend.
So, in short, a changing trend in weather events, probably, but individual weather events, no.
================
What might be worth asking is 'have there been more record warm events than record cold events in the last decade? I would expect the answer would be 'warm events' but I don't really know. Is anyone counting?

Has anyone seen the weather forecast for the Global Warming summit in Coppenhagen?
As if on cue with former Vice President Al Gores arrival in Copenhagen, the site of the United Nations climate summit is expected to receive heavy snowfall and bitter cold temperatures. With a bit of amusement some have pointed to the arrival of the cold weather as an example of the Gore Effect.
In recent years, the term Gore Effect has come to take note of unseasonable weather that seems to accompany the Nobel Laureate or when a significant global warming event is held. Since 2004 these coincidences occur with uncanny frequency. Gore arrived in Copenhagen yesterday and caused a stir in his first public event by claiming that all Arctic sea ice could disappear within five years.
The Dutch Meteorological Institutes forecast for Wednesday calls for heavy snowfall with high temperatures of only 35 degrees (2 degrees Celsius). Temperatures will continue to drop Thursday and winds will be between 25 and 30 mph causing wind chill temperatures in the teens. Fridays high temperature is forecast to stay below freezing and overnight lows will drop all the way to 10 degrees (-12 Celsius).
In recent weeks as Gore started to make a number of media appearances related to the release of his new book "Our Choice" and the Copenhagen summit, much of the United States was plunged into unusually cold weather.

Has anybody else encountered solicitors after using Morningstar.com?
I was using the service on Morningstar.com because it offered a consolidated daily look at my finances from several brokerage houses together.
Now, I get constant phone calls from semi-legitimate firms offering different stocks or funds, but these guys sound straight out of the movie "Boiler Room" - strong Northern Jersey accents with little idea what the cr@p stock actually does. They always ask how my quarter is going and what I can do this quarter, etc? Just a nuisance.
Anybody else run into this with Morningstar.com or another service, if so, please share.
Yeah, I know Morningstar.com sold my name for XYZ amount of money, but for being the nations weather vane on fund performance, do you think this is out of left field for them?
(BTW, I know its Morningstar.com because I accidently misspelled my name on the account and its funny to hear the missprounced name each time.)

Whats exactly prostitution?
Some say its just a profession like any other, some say its a crime against women and children and even some say its a social service. So whats the truth about prostitution? Also why do some governments dont stop it or even legalize it in some part of their nations even though theyve laws strictly banning prostitution.
Also please give the situation in youre nation along with nations name. Also say weather its legal/not.
Answer: Singapore tolerates prostitution in certain areas, provided they are confined to those areas and licensed. It is also illegal to solicit for sex.
Prostitution is the offering of sexual services as a form of commerce. The greatest arguments against prostitution are:
(1) That it demeans the men and women involved, male or female. While detractors claim it is a matter of choice, there is an equally strong argument that many prostitutes are in a state of poverty, and effectively forced into their trade.
(2) Prostitution encourages people to view others as objects, and historically, has been related to slavery. The concubines of a king, for example, are arguably forced prostitutes.
(3) Prostitution damages the family unit, which is the nucleus of society. It is considered to have adverse effects on the role of fatherhood or motherhood (e.g. when a prostitute is a parent, or when a parent actively engages prostitutes).
This is an economic as well as moral issue, since family problems are a significant drain on social services.
(4) When prostitution is legalized, it becomes significantly harder for authorities to distinguish between sex slaves and voluntary prostitutes. Pimps who own sex slaves will attempt to pass them off as voluntary prostitutes, and their victims are often blackmailed or bullied into claiming they are voluntary.
Human traffickers have greater difficulty when prostitution is outright banned (they just arrest the whole lot).
(5) Prostitution is a major source of illegal immigration. However, it is argued (with serious validity) that making prostitution illegal will not diminish illegal immigration anyway. They're already breaking one law, they may as well break another.
(6) Prostitution affects educational standards. There is a perception, in countries where social escorts or prostitutes are legal, that prostitution is a viable alternative to continuing education. A prostitute can earn as much as the average degree holder, without having to go through the requisite schooling.
Again, family units are affected by this. Parents may decide that their children are better off earning an income for the family as prostitutes, rather than paying for their children's education. Because I don't want to cause offense, I won't name the particular countries where this happens, but I'm sure some of you know.
Arguments for prostitution are:
(1) Attempting to arrest someone for being a prostitute is legally dubious. If both partners are consenting adults, and one claims that the other is a boyfriend / girlfriend, what exactly can the state do?
The solution is to interrogate both members and trace their histories, which results in intrusion of privacy. "Legal" couples are as harassed by the process as prostitutes. In countries with "morality police", this practice often results in fear and oppression, particularly of women.
This is the main reason why laws against prostitution are not always enforced. Authorities are forced to go into absurd and expensive lengths to determine the "truth" of whether someone is another person's boyfriend / girlfriend.
(2) Legalized prostitution means that standards can be set on sex workers. This includes regular check-ups for diseases such as AIDs. This can prevent a potential epidemic. However, there is some data which, as of early 2004, demonstrated that the risk of STDs are no higher or lower even with legalization.
There is a phenomena known as The Prostitute Paradox:
http://www.virusmyth.com/aids/hiv/rrbprostitute.html
that also demonstrates an inexplicably low rate of HIV / AIDs transmission amongst prostitutes (they are low risk).
(3) Legalized prostitutes enjoy the protection of the state. This means they can be taxed, and their (relatively high) incomes will contribute to society.
(4) Moral hypocrisy is an issue. If prostitution is banned because it is harmful to the public, then it makes no sense that tobacco and alcohol are legal, as those products are equally, if not more, harmful to the public.
(5) If someone attaches themselves to a partner for the sake of wealth (e.g. a pretty young woman who marries an aging millionaire) is that technically prostitution?
If it is, does it make sense that the state has to determine whether every man or woman is marrying for money? How can anyone tell for sure?
If it isn't, then why is a direct offer of sexual service more acceptable than a subtle one?
(6) Prostitutes provide outlets of sexual relief. Amongst individuals unable to find a partner, this is a major health issue. Depression, suicide, paraphilia, or resort to rape are symptoms of sexual repression.
