Why am I reading that Mike Huckabee is at the top of the VP list?

Seriously. Is John McCain in any danger of losing Arkansas or Georgia in the fall? Are the evangelicals REALLY going to unite behind either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton? The battleground states this year are going to be New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Nevada. Huckabee cant help McCain in those states. He might get a bump in Virginia or Florida, but not a big one; not as big as, say, Mitt Romney. Romney did far better than Huckabee in each of these states in which they went head-to-head, winning most of them, in fact. In states where he didnt compete, he had major Republican support, including the Lt. Governor of Virginia and former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. Hes also incredibly popular in the neighboring states of Ohio, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, and most importantly, California. Why isnt Romney in the number one spot? Thats a good point, Grady; but the report shows that part of the reason Republicans are losing their grip on politics is ossification, or "holding onto the old ways". Despite his guitar and repeated Daily Show appearances, Huckabee is not a "new Republican". And for those who think that Romneys appeal is even less broad, let me repeat that hes done very well in the North and the East, as well as in the South and the West. Huckabee, by comparison, is entirely parochial.
Answer: Huckabee will appeal to those who don't believe in evolution and like his folksy mannerisms. He can help win voters in the deep south, who may not turn out to vote because McCain is disliked by Limbaugh. Romney may be a little too slick-looking for these voters, and his Mormon religion doesn't help out much with fundamentalist religious extremist voters. A whole lot of southern fundamentalists thing Mormonism is a cult.

Why am I reading that Mike Huckabee is at the top of the VP list?

Seriously. Is John McCain in any danger of losing Arkansas or Georgia in the fall? Are the evangelicals REALLY going to unite behind either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton? The battleground states this year are going to be New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Nevada. Huckabee cant help McCain in those states. He might get a bump in Virginia or Florida, but not a big one; not as big as, say, Mitt Romney. Romney did far better than Huckabee in each of these states in which they went head-to-head, winning most of them, in fact. In states where he didnt compete, he had major Republican support, including the Lt. Governor of Virginia and former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. Hes also incredibly popular in the neighboring states of Ohio, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, and most importantly, California. Why isnt Romney in the number one spot?
Answer: I have an indpendent friend who Likes McCain but will not vote for him if a conservative is on the ticket and I know of many like that. the battle in November will be for Independents and McCain needs them. He will not get them with Santorum (who was voted out in PA), Huckabee or Romney. He also will have trouble with conservatives if he goes with Lieberman. He has to choose very carefully because of his age and his need to not alienate his base or the Independents who might consider him. It is a tight cakewalk for him. He can't win w/o the base, but he also can't win w/o the swing voters. Also Bob Barr is a nightmare for him. He is a long fave of conservatives. his best choice might be Charlie Crist of FL. A state he must win and Crist might be conservative enough for the base, but since he is a fiscal moderate might not hurt him with the independents.

But heres the question, with the growing Hispanic population are republicans making the wrong choice by fighting against Hispanics? On one hand, it may help them in the short term but in the long run it could almost mean republicans entire defeat. Bush won New Mexico in 2004 but it really shows how the Hispanic vote counts. If Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona become solid democrat that would be the end of the republican party because of the way the electoral college is set up. Wouldnt it make more since for republicans to try to win over Hispanics anyway they can to plan for the future? Answer: Its very easy for them to say this now or perhaps they're just kids. However by 2020, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico will all lean blue. Making it very hard for republicans to have a chance, So if I were republicans I'd stop pandering to organizations like the NRA ( they're going to vote GOP anywy ) and just focus on building a bridge with Hispanics..
