In 1962, Nelson Rockefeller, the liberal Governor of New York, was the presumed 1964 nominee of the GOP. During the 1960s, Romneys father, George Romney, was a liberal Republican from Michigan (and Governor of that state). The elder Romney briefly led the liberal wing of the GOP in their effort to keep Goldwater from gaining the nomination. One of the big mistakes in the article Iinked is that it says that Romney "nearly won" the Republican nomination in 2008. He did no such thing. Romney consistently underperformed, losing Iowa to Huckabee and New Hampshire to McCain after being the favorite to win those states for all of 2007. Romney withdrew after a disastrous Super Tuesday where McCain all but clinched the nomination and where he was outperformed by Mike Huckabee. Romney, in spite of the support of his employee Rush Limbaugh (yes, Romney owns the company that employs Limbaugh), failed to draw any significant support in 2008 (Ron Pauls performance in 2008 was pretty good, considering that the country was not ready for his message, unlike now, when the Tea Party has co-opted much of his platform). If Romney was such a strong candidate, he should have given McCain far more of a challenge in 2008, when the trend was going toward the left. Although the GOPs ruling moderate wing today claims Goldwater as one of their own, in reality they no longer stand for much of anything that Goldwater stood for. Today, Goldwaters son, a former Republican Congressman during the 1970s, supports Ron Paul, whom he endorsed in 2008. Ron Paul is the first candidate in decades to represent the Goldwaterites who were run out of the Republican Party in 1965 or so (if you go back and read the back issues of National Review, youll notice that the GOP started a purge of libertarians and libertarian-leaning conservatives after Goldwaters defeat). One major difference between 1964 and 2012 would be Ron Pauls strength in the general election. Polls show him neck-and-neck with Obama. I personally doubt that Obama would do very well in a debate with Ron Paul, so I think Ron Paul could probably win by a 55% to 45% margin. If Romney is the nominee, I think he will lose (I know for certain that I wont vote for a Republican who supports the same policies as Obama, as that would neutralize the unified Republican opposition and enable a faster growth of government; in a race between Romney and Obama, I would be torn between voting for a weak Obama, provided that he has a Republican Congress to render him ineffective, or for a 3rd party candidate who truly wants limited government).
