New Jersey Legislature To Vote On Gay Marriage This Week Despite ...
... last week to legalize gay marriage, the national debate over gay equality shifts to New Jersey ... and State Assembly, but Governor Chris Christie will most likely veto it.
Washington state is now the 8th state to legalize same-sex marriage. Is this progress or what?
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Gov. Chris Gregoire handed gay rights advocates a major victory, signing into law a measure that legalizes same-sex marriage in Washington state, making it the seventh in the nation to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.
Gregoire signed the bill surrounded by gay rights supporters. "Im proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal," she said.
Its a historic moment, but same-sex couples cant walk down the aisle just yet.
The law takes effect June 7, but opponents on multiple fronts already are preparing to fight.
Opponents planned to file a challenge Monday that could put the law on hold pending the outcome of a November vote. Separately, an initiative was filed at the beginning of the session that opponents of gay marriage say could lead to the new law being overturned.
The state reception room at the Capitol was packed with gay rights supporters and at least 40 lawmakers from the House and Senate
Sen. Ed Murray, a Seattle Democrat who is gay and has sponsored gay rights legislation for years, told the cheering crowd: "My friends, welcome to the other side of the rainbow. No matter what the future holds, nothing will take this moment away from us."
As the Democratic governor signed the legislation, a man shouted, "Do not betray Christ!" However, his voice was overwhelmed by gay-marriage supporters who cheered and spoke loudly during his outburst.
Bob Struble, 68, of Bremerton, was removed from the room and said he was given a warning by security. Struble said he believes the state will halt gay marriage in a public vote. "Well be doing everything we can to overturn this unfortunate law," he said
Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who opposes gay marriage, was in town speaking with conservative voters. Santorum also planned to meet with Republican lawmakers at the Capitol later Monday.
Gregoires signature comes nearly a week after a federal appeals court declared Californias ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.
A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals gave gay marriage opponents time to appeal the 2-1 decision against Proposition 8 before ordering the state to allow same-sex weddings to resume. The judges also said the decision only applies to California, even though the court has jurisdiction in nine Western states.
Washington state has had domestic partnership laws since 2007, and in 2009 passed an "everything but marriage" expansion of that law, which was ultimately upheld by voters after a referendum challenge.
Opponents said they would file a ballot challenge after Gregoire signed the measure that would require voters in November to either uphold or overturn the law. If the referendum gets enough signatures the law is put on hold pending the outcome of a November vote.
Separately, an anti-gay marriage initiative was filed at the beginning of the session, but the language is still being worked out so no signatures have been collected yet. An initiative alone would not pause the law.
Gay marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C.
Same-sex marriage also has the backing of several prominent Pacific Northwest businesses, including Microsoft Corp., Nike Inc. and Starbucks Corp.
Legislative committees in Maryland heard testimony on gay marriage last week. Lawmakers in New Jersey are expected to vote on gay marriage soon, with a vote in the state Senate on Monday and a vote in the Assembly on Thursday.
N.J. Gov. Chris Christie, who is pushing for a public vote on the issue, says hell veto the bill if it comes to his desk. Maine could see a gay marriage proposal on the November ballot.
Proposed amendments to ban gay marriage will be on the ballots in North Carolina in May and in Minnesota in November.

Question about New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?
(please no rants, just rational answers)
Polls show majority of New Jersey residents support gay marriage. However, it is looking questionable if their pro-gay-marriage governor will be re-elected in November 2009.
In 2008, Corzine, a gay marriage supporter, refused to bring the issue to the legislature because he didnt want to make it a "presidential-election-year issue."
Okay, fine...................So why didnt he bring it to the legislature in 2009?
See heres the situation: Hes up for re-election in November 2009. and hes trailing his Republican opponent, Chris Christie, in the polls. Christie says hell veto gay marriage.
So seeing as how Corzines job is in jeopardy for 2010..............why doesnt he legalize it now, in 2009, while he has the chance?
R Maddow: I agree; let the people decide. Seeing as how the majority of New Jersey residents support gay marriage, gay marriage would pass in New Jersey. IF it were put on the ballot.
Answer: I doubt he will do that. He is too worried about himself and his political career. The are mostly concerned with our state debt, 3 billion dollars, that hasn't gone anywhere since he has been elected.

Will New Jersey approve gay marriage bill?
Im crossing my fingers on this one.
If the entire assembly votes yes, it will be up to Corzine to sign the bill. Hes a Democrat. Christie (the opposition) has already said he would not sign it.
"Same-sex marriage: Christie has said that he favors New Jerseys current law allowing same-sex couples to form civil unions but would veto any bill legalizing same-sex marriage.[52]"I also believe marriage should be exclusively between one man and one woman.... If a bill legalizing same sex marriage came to my desk as Governor, I would veto it." source: Wikipedia.
Answer: I think it's disgusting that there ever WAS a ban on homosexual marriage in the first place, in any state. Christians seem to misinterpret the Bible's words. The overzealous ones (well, some overzealous Christians) will insist that the good book says that homosexuality is wrong and immoral...yes, it may say this, but it ALSO says that it isn't a deadly, horrible evil sin. Being an atheist, I think this is all ridiculous, but I digress. God doesn't condemn homosexuality according to the Bible, and it's never stated that he'd force anyone to change themselves to become 'perfect' in his image. If the God portrayed in the book exists (unlikely), he wouldn't send people to a state of eternal damnation for such a small aspect of their life.
Now, this being the case, why is it that our government, which should represent and uphold the rights of EVERYONE, prefers to regard the morality of homosexuality in one religion over others? Why should such a union, one that effects no one but those being married, be banned?
It makes no sense. Not to me.

How come Chris Christies influence was able to stop gay marriage, but not medical marijuana?
2009:
Incumbent Governor Jon Corzine vs Chris Christie
Corzine is in favor of gay marriage and medical marijuana.
Christie vows to veto both of them.
Its widely believed that the Democrats in the New Jersey Senate squandered an opportunity to pass gay marriage.
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/01/gay_marriage_in_new_jersey_onc.html
Spring 2009: it seems like gay marriage would likely pass, should it be put to a vote.
but the idiot Democrats decided to play games and put it off until after the Fall 2009 election.
Corzine didnt want the issue to distract the campaign from economic issues.
(a very stupid strategy because the bad economy under Corzines watch made him look bad.)
So Christie wins the election...........
which means they have to pass the 2 bills during the lame-duck session before Christie takes office.
They FAIL to pass gay marriage.
(had the vote been held earlier in Spring, it would have likely got as many as 5 Republicans voting for the bill. Instead, only 1 Republican voted yes, and a handful of Dems voted no.)
but Medical Marijuana, which Christie also opposes........PASSED the senate and was signed into law by Corzine during the lame-duck session!
how?
Answer: Seriously?
You do not understand the difference?
And I assume when you say gay marriage put to a vote, you are not referring to a vote of THE PEOPLE, because it has been BURIED in every ballot it has been put on so far.
It takes a whacked-out DEMONcrat congress or an activist supreme court to put it in . Just like Obama-care, the PEOPLE do not want it!
Of course, in YOUR perfect world, the government knows better what is good for the people.

Why are gay marriage proponents in New Jersey so hard to work with?
They had a chance to pass it in 2008.
"No, not during a presidential election year."
They had a chance to pass it in 2009.
"No, lets wait until the lame-duck session after the governors race."
(Republicans win the governors race and suddenly......)
Senate President (D) Sweeney: "I will not support this bill."
several months later, long after the Republican Governor is sworn in.....
Sweeney: "What a terrible mistake, I made a political calculation and I apologize."
"Were going to pass gay marriage even if it means overriding the governors veto."
(unfortunately, there arent enough votes for an override.)
Governor Christie, as much of an asshole he can be, has suggested a logical alternative: Pass the bill in the form of a ballot iniative; let the people vote on gay marriage.
(although this isnt really the "ideal" way to pass civil rights......it has a strong chance of success. It would probably pass with ease.)
Sweeney: "No way. I prefer to do this the hard way."
@Aubrey: Thats not what the current national polls say.
Answer: In part I think they were victims of the politicians and were not united enough regarding tactics. A referendum is the wrong way to go, because of a real danger of defeat
Hope this helps

Gay marriage recap for 2012: Your thoughts?
Washington State: Legislative Passage likely early this year.
New Jersey:
Legislative passage surprisingly possible......but they must overcome Governor Christies veto.
They will need some Republican votes.
Meanwhile theres a court battle going on, but that wont be resolved for a few years yet.
New Hampshire:
Legislative repeal possible.
Republicans control the legislature with veto-proof majorities, maybe enough to overcome Gov. John Lynch.
Maryland: Legislative passage likely this year, with referendum to place it on the November ballot.
North Carolina: Anti-gay amendment to be on the ballot in May, not November.
Imagine if the 1st state to reject a gay marraige ban via popular vote would be a SOUTHERN state? lol
Minnesota:
Theres an ongoing court battle that wont be resovled for a while yet........
but an anti-gay amendment on the November ballot, if passed, will make the lawsuit moot.
Maine: Will be on the November ballot. This marks the 1st time in history that those in favor of gay marriage put the issue to a public vote.
Did NOT make the ballot:
Oregon, Colorado, California.
Both DOMA and the Prop 8 lawsuits will likely be resolved in 2013.
Answer: Progress is being made, albeit too slowly. Gay Rights and opposition to discrimination require one final and just solution, which the US Supreme Court Could deliver if they wanted to. Pressure has to be applied though.
Hope this helps

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/gaysouthflorida/2012/01/republican-new-jersey-gov-chris-christie-appoints-gay-black-mayor-to-state-supreme-court.html
There are ongoing efforts both legislatively and judicially to legalize gay marriage in the state of New Jersey........
Chris Christie has long-threatened to veto the bill......but has recently been changing his tune.
Answer: It think it's a good move because he is paying some heed to the gay community , but the judge may still be a reactionary, and to me it's an act of hypocrisy because in his heart of hearts he is still ahomophobe and a phony.
Hope this helps
