Have the GOP Religious Christians become the Pharisees of our time?

They think they are better then anyone and if you dont see things their way then you are dirt beneath their feet. Whether because of Romney’s past liberalism on gay rights and abortion or because of his Mormon faith, many of the evangelical Christians who make up the Republican base just don’t like him. They’ve been looking for an alternative, by turns telling pollsters of their support for Michele Bachmann, then Rick Perry, then Herman Cain. One by one, they’ve dropped in the polls, or out of the race altogether. Now it’s Gingrich’s turn in the spotlight. But the argument over Gingrich’s personal life also raises fundamental questions about the candidate himself and his readiness for the nation’s highest office. Just how much has Gingrich changed since his days as a volatile and philandering House speaker? Does he have the character to be president? And, at least for many of the evangelical voters who will dominate the early primaries: Is he a true believer?

Trump praises Perry, keeps open a possible run By BETH FOUHY, Associated Press – 4 days ago NEW YORK (AP) — Real estate mogul Donald Trump said Tuesday he expects Texas Gov. Rick Perry to do "very nicely" as a presidential candidate. But Trump stopped short of endorsing Perry and said he hasnt ruled out running for president himself as an independent. In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said Perry was a welcome entry in the GOP field that includes former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll Saturday, the same day Perry announced he too would seek the partys nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012. "I think Rick Perry is a real positive. Nobody can predict outcomes, but I think he will do very nicely," Trump said. "We need someone in this country who is willing to shake things up." Trump, a multimillionaire reality show host, flirted publicly with joining the Republican presidential field before opting out of the race in May. He had gained considerable attention by stirring renewed controversy over President Barack Obamas Hawaii birth, leading the White House to persuade the state to release a copy of Obamas long-form birth certificate after two years of dismissing the issue. On Tuesday, Trump said he would still consider running next year as an independent if he doesnt believe the candidate who wins the GOP nomination is strong enough to beat Obama. Trump said hed make a decision after the next season of his show, "Celebrity Apprentice," ends in June. "I have an obligation. We have a tremendous following — millions of people who would like to see me run," Trump said. Trump also defended Perrys suggestion Monday that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would be committing a "treasonous" act if he pumped more money into the economy. "It was a meaningless phrase, it was just rhetorical. Hes very emotional about how the country is doing," Trump said of Perry, pushing back on President George W. Bushs former political director Karl Rove and other Republicans who have criticized Perrys comment. "Karl Rove is an empty hat," Trump said. "We ended up with Obama because of Karl Rove and George W. Bush."

What do you think of my theory on why Michele Bachmann will emerge as the GOP nominee?

Intelligent replies only, please. I dont care how much you hate Michele Bachmann or think that she is possessed by el diablo etc etc. These are the facts: The frantic haste with which conservatives have backed a new candidate EVERY time Mitt Romney has become the frontrunner proves that the Republican electorate hates him. Just think about it. As soon as Rick Perry entered the race, he skyrocketed to #1 by a double digit margin. There was no real reason other than Romney hate (or more specifically, intolerance against mormons among the GOP). Once it was revealed that Rick Perry cannot speak properly at all and would lose miserably to Obama, Perrys star faded. Romney was once again frontrunner. Then IMMEDIATELY, the GOP gets behind Herman Cain. Its as if, there are a bloc of voters who will just not have Mitt Romney as their candidate. SO...here s my theory. Herman Cain will duke it out with Romney for a while until finally the media and his fellow candidates show how flimsy the 999 plan really is. Voters ultimately will not choose to saddle themselves with a new federal sales tax. When Cain falls, someone else MUST rise to the top, to continue the trend of stomping out Romney. That person could only be Michele Bachmann. She will be the only true conservative left. And after all, the only reason she started falling in the first place was that Perry entered the race. Rick Perry is now on life support, so Bachmann is the only true conservative left to fill the vaccuum. She will take Iowa, grab the frontrunner spot, and ultimately, be the GOP nominee.
Answer: I think she might be the favorite to win Iowa. That is where she is from, and she is well-liked by TEA party Republicans. I think you are somewhat forgetting Newt Gingrich - he is gaining steam. He has too many skeletons in his closet to be the Presidential nominee, but he could be next to be a front-runner. Then Rick Santorum or even Jon Huntsman could get a last minute surge. My guess is Republicans will either have to suck it up and rally behind Romney, or they will nominate a weak candidate that will turn off independent voters, guaranteeing Obama's re-election.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL editorial page, that irascible voice of high-minded conservatism, has taken a rather dim view of Mitt Romney. Its hard to discern any core beliefs beyond faith in his own managerial expertise, it wrote in September. The columnist George F. Have the GOP Religious Christians become the Pharisees of our time?

They think they are better then anyone and if you dont see things their way then you are dirt beneath their feet. Whether because of Romney’s past liberalism on gay rights and abortion or because of his Mormon faith, many of the evangelical Christians who make up the Republican base just don’t like him. They’ve been looking for an alternative, by turns telling pollsters of their support for Michele Bachmann, then Rick Perry, then Herman Cain. One by one, they’ve dropped in the polls, or out of the race altogether. Now it’s Gingrich’s turn in the spotlight. But the argument over Gingrich’s personal life also raises fundamental questions about the candidate himself and his readiness for the nation’s highest office. Just how much has Gingrich changed since his days as a volatile and philandering House speaker? Does he have the character to be president? And, at least for many of the evangelical voters who will dominate the early primaries: Is he a true believer?
Answer: I'm not sure what you mean by GOP religious Christians, but I do have to say I've made the observation that there are some fundamentalist Christians involving themselves in politics in such a way that their behavior more closely mirrors that of the pharisees in the Bible than mirrors the behavior of Jesus Christ. (Associated Press) WASHINGTON - Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in a poll of Republican voters in Iowa, followed by Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. Former House Speaker Gingrich received support from 25 percent of likely voters in the leadoff Iowa caucus, while Texas congressman Paul had 18 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 16 percent in the Des Moines Registers Iowa Poll released Saturday. Gingrichs support stood at just 7 percent in the most recent Iowa Poll, conducted in late October. Businessman Herman Cain, who suspended his campaign today amid claims of sexual misconduct, was at 8 percent in the latest poll, down from 23 percent in October. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann was also at 8 percent. Herman Cain drops out The race is on for Cain endorsement Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania were at 6 percent each, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman was at 2 percent. Answer: We liberals would like nothing more than for Gingrich to get it. He wouldn’t stand a chance against Obama. For many reasons, ethics being one of them.
